How do I report an ACES problem?
Notify the Office of Information Technology Help Desk by phone, 684-2200, during normal business hours (hours listed on http://www.oit.duke.edu/helpdesk/). After normal business hours, contact the Help Desk by sending an email to help@oit.duke.edu, or by submitting an online form for help https://www.dunk.duke.edu/secure/submit/index.htm .

Please include the following information:

  • Your name and student ID so we can identify you in the system.
  • The action you were performing before the error occurred (e.g. I was moving a course to my book bag). Please be as specific as possible.
  • Try to provide exact error message text, if possible.
  • Did system prevent you from doing something you thought you should be able to do?
  • Your contact information, if you would be willing to help solve the problem should we need to contact you.

What is the optimal screen resolution for using ACES?
ACES is best viewed at a minimum screen resolution of 800x600 pixels. Top

How do I enable JavaScript on my browser?
Follow the steps below to make sure your browser has JavaScript enabled.

For Mozilla 3:

  1. Go to "Tools" on the main menu bar
  2. Select "Options..."
  3. Select "Content" tab
  4. Make sure "Enable JavaScript" and "Enable Java" are checked
  5. Click on "OK"

For Internet Explorer 6:

  1. Go to "Tools" on the main menu bar
  2. Select "Internet Options"
  3. Select the "Security" tab
  4. Make sure "Internet" is selected and click the "Custom Level..." button
  5. Scroll down until you reach the "Scripting" section
  6. Under "Active scripting", make sure the "Enable" radio button is selected
  7. Click the "OK" button
  8. If you are asked if you want to change security settings, select "Yes"
  9. Click on "OK"

Are connections between your Internet browser and the ACES Web server secure?
Yes, data transmitted between your Internet browser and the ACES Web server is encrypted by the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) Internet protocol. Top

Why does the login screen keep appearing after entering NETID (formerly ACPUB User ID) and password?
If the login screen keeps appearing when you are attempting to login to ACES, check to make sure your cookies are enabled. You must have cookies enabled on your browser. Follow the steps below to make sure your browser is setup with cookies enabled. Top

For Mozilla 3:

  1. Go to "Tools" on the main menu bar
  2. Select "Options"
  3. Select "Privacy & Security"
  4. In the Cookies section, make sure "Accept cookies from sites" and "Accept third-party cookies are selected
  5. Click on "OK"

For Internet Explorer 6.x:

  1. Go to "Tools" on the main menu bar
  2. Select "Internet Options"
  3. Select the "Privacy" tab
  4. Make sure the privacy setting is set to "Medium"
  5. Click the "OK" button

Why is it important to log out of ACE, exit the Internet browser, and log off of your computer?
It is very important to log out of ACES, exit the Internet browser, and log off of your computer because these actions prevent the next user from using ACES as you and from viewing personal information contained on your forms. Top

What are course permission numbers and how are they obtained?
Permission numbers are required to register for designated courses and can be obtained from Instructor or Department, as designated. Permission numbers are not required to put courses in your bookbag. Top

Are maximum course credit limits enforced by ACES?
Yes. The maximum number of course credits will be enforced when you attempt to enroll. You can, however,add as many courses as you like to your bookbag. To create a potential schedule place a check mark beside the courses in which you would like to enroll. Click on the "Validate" button to check for maximum course credits, time conflicts and prerequisites. Top

Do wait listed courses count towards the maximum course credit limit?
Yes, if you successfully register for a course that has a waitlist then that course counts towards the total maximum credits you are permitted to register for. Top

Can I register for more than the maximum course credit limit?
If you wish to register for more courses than the maximum course limit allows you must see your academic dean. If your academic dean wishes to permit this over enrollment this will be noted in the system. Top

How do I register for courses in my bookbag?
Once your registration window opens, you must click the green "Go to Enroll"to register. Bookbags are provided as a convenience for students to do as much upfront planning as possible before their registration window opens. Make sure you have been made eligible to enrool by your advisor and have entered any course permission numbers that may be required. Top

Under what circumstances will I not be able to register for courses in my bookbag?
You will not be able to register for courses in your bookbag, if:

  1. Your assigned registration window has not yet been opened.
  2. You have not been made eligible to enroll by your advisor.
  3. You have an administrative hold attached to your student records. If this situation exists, a message appears on a student's home page in the box located on the right-hand side of the page. Students with holds will be able to place courses in their bookbags in order to plan for registration once the hold is removed. Top

How are course time conflicts handled?
You cannot put courses that have time conflicts into your bookbag. If you attempt to put a course into your book bag that has a time conflict with either classes in your bookbag or classes in which you are already enrolled, you will receive a notification that this course has been placed into your alternates.
