Auditing a Class

Students should not enroll in classes they plan to audit. Enrolling in a course under the audit grading basis requires the PRIOR approval of the instructor. Undergraduate students must complete and return the Permission to Audit Form.  The Registrar’s office will also accept an email from the instructor’s Duke email address indicating approval for an audited course.  The email must contain the student’s student ID number, the subject, catalog number, and section number of the course, and the 4/5 digit class number.  Once the Registrar’s office receives the audit approval, the student will be enrolled.

Trinity students are not permitted to audit PHYSEDU courses or undergraduate studio art, applied music, and dance/technique courses.

Audited courses count as part of a student's total allowable credits during registration, but they do not count toward course load when determining full-time and part-time status.  No course credit is earned for an audited class.  Students may not take a class for audit and then later for credit.  Students cannot audit the same class twice. Independent study courses can be taken as audit.

The deadline for the declaration of audit is the end of the drop/add period.
