FAQs
- DukeHub - Duke's student information system, where students find and register for their classes
- Shopping Cart - A "holding area" where students can add classes before registering. Students can add multiple classes/sections to their shopping cart. Students are not enrolled in classes in their shopping cart.
- Enrollment/Registration Window/Appointment - When a group of students are allowed to start registering for classes.
- Waitlist - A list of students who will "roll into" a class if and when a seats opens up. Students are not enrolled in classes in they are on the waitlist. Students are not notified if they roll into a class.
- Drop/Add - The period of time following the enrollment/registration window that students are allowed to drop and add classes. This typically ends the second week of classes.
- Permission Number - A code given by the department or instructor that allows a student to enroll in a class that is closed, or that they do not meet the prerequisites for. Permission numbers cannot be used to over-enroll seminars about 18 students. Permission numbers cannot be used to enroll students in classes outside of their career.
- Make sure that you have in fact added the permission number to the class. If the class is already in your shopping cart, click the three dots to the right, choose "Edit", enter the permission number, and click "Save". If the class isn't in your shopping cart yet, when you add it to your shopping cart, the box for the permission number will pop up.
- Make sure that the permission number is for the correct class. Permission numbers are section specific, so a permission number for MATH 101 section 01 will NOT work for MATH 101 section 02. Similarly, permission numbers will not work across cross-listings. A permission number for PUBPOL 101 will NOT work for EVANTH 101, even if they are cross-listed.
- Permission numbers expire. Mostly they are set to expire well in the future, but some departments might set them to expire sooner. Use them quickly!
- Permission numbers can only be used once. If you use a permission number to enroll in a class, and then drop the class, you will need a new permission number to enroll again.

The Schedule of Classes is the list of classes offered during a particular semester. The listing includes date, time, and location information for each section. The Course Catalog is a comprehensive volume of all active courses at Duke, not all of which are offered in any given term.
Both the Schedule of Classes and the Course Catalog are found in DukeHub and are available to the Duke community and the public.
- Go to dukehub.duke.edu.
- Duke users with a NetID can click on the Student, Faculty, and Advisor Login tile. Authenticate with your NetID and password. You will arrive at your Dashboard.
- Non-Duke users can click Class Search to view the public course catalog and schedule of classes.

- Find the Class Information section the left-hand menu, and select either Advanced Class Search, Simple Class Search, or Course Catalog.

Class Details
Click anywhere on a class section to expand and see additional class details.

The topic title is specific to each section of a class. Hover over the topic column in the row, or find the full topic title under Class Information.
Typically, the topic title is used for special topics classes and independent studies. It may sometimes be used to clarify enrollment requirements.

DukeHub shows how many seats are available in each section of a class.
In Advanced Class Search, toggle Show Open Classes Only to view all sections or only available sections.
The class status shows whether the class has open seats. Class status displays in the Avail/Capacity column as # of seats available / # of total seats.
- Open: seats are available (Indicated by a green square with the letter O)
- Example: 6 out of 18 seats are available

reserve Caps
Reserve Capacity is indicated by a gray triangle with an exclamation point in Avail/Capacity. Hover over the Reserve icon to view additional information.
A reserve capacity means that a certain number of seats in the class are being held for a group of students.
In the example below, the class has 12 seats total.
- 5 open to any student
- 4 reserved for first-years (all 4 of these seats are still available)
- 1 each reserved for sophomores, juniors, and seniors (all 3 of these seats are full)
All reserves expire on the same day - in this case, the first day of classes.

Enrollment Requirements (Prerequisites)
Also called prerequisites or reserves, these are requirements that students have to fulfill in order to enroll. They may be based on class level, major, or completion of other classes.
Students will find Enrollment Requirements in the Class Information section of the class details.
Enrollment requirements can be overridden by permission number at the discretion of the instructor and/or department.

Recommended prerequisites appear only in the course description and are not enforced by DukeHub, but should still be considered.

Add Consent (Permission Number)
For classes that require Instructor or Department consent, students must enter a permission number to enroll in the class. Students should contact the class's instructor or department to request the permission number.

Class Attributes display all curriculum codes that a class carries. If a curriculum code is not displayed, the class cannot be used to fulfill it. Class Attributes are also used for other class features such as seminars, S/U not allowed, and service-learning, among others.

Class Notes are specific to each section and display additional details about enrollment or the class content.

Components are the type of class sections required for a class. Most regular classes are lectures. Classes can also be seminars, independent studies, labs, discussions.
If students are required to enroll in multiple sections of the same course (for example, a lecture and lab or lecture and discussion), both sections will display here.

A combined section, or crosslist, means that the same class is listed under multiple subjects. In the example below, Science of Happiness is called both PSY 216S and ETHICS 217S because both subjects are relevant.
Students can enroll in either section. In this example, all 18 students are enrolled in PSY 216S. ETHICS 217S is still closed because crosslisted classes share seats.

Shopping Cart & Schedule Builder
Before registration opens, students can add potential classes to their shopping cart (sometimes called a bookbag) to keep track of classes they may want to take. Having a class in your shopping cart does not mean that you are enrolled. Using the shopping cart is encouraged but not required.
Students can also use Schedule Builder to search for classes and visualize potential weekly schedules. Watch the Schedule Builder video tutorial created by Duke Student Government.
The shopping cart helps you explore classes to determine whether there will be schedule conflicts, enrollment limits, credit limits, unsatisfied prerequisites, etc. You can select any number of classes in your shopping cart and “validate” them to see whether there are conflicts, issues with prerequisites, etc. In addition, the shopping cart is the primary way of enrolling in classes.
To add a course to your shopping cart: when you find a class, click Add to Cart. You can use any number of search options to find classes (see Class Search).

Placing a class in your Shopping Cart does not reserve a seat in the class. Students must add classes to their Shopping Cart, select the checkbox next to the class, and then select Enroll in order to register for the class when their enrollment appointment opens.
To DELETE a course: Click on the checkbox next to the course name, and select the Delete button. You will be prompted to confirm the deletion of the course from your Shopping Cart.
Classes fill up quickly during registration. We strongly recommend students have backup schedules in their Shopping Cart in case the preferred sections of their classes are no longer available.
Navigate to Schedule Builder under the Enrollment menu to begin creating a schedule.
- Select the appropriate Term from the dropdown menu.
- Import Courses to import course from your Enrollment, Planner, Shopping Cart or Wait List and/or
- Use filters to select courses. Use Availability, Global Filters and Section Filters to narrow down your preferences.

- Use Section Filters to identify courses by Course Attribute (i.e. Mode of Inquiry) and Course Attribute Value (i.e. R- Research). The Course Selection dropdown Subject and Catalog Number will display only courses that meet the Section Filters parameters.

- After selecting the Subject and Catalog Number, the Course Description will appear below the course.
- Select the Add Course button to add the course to your Build Schedule list.
- Select the Build Schedule button once all your preferred courses have been entered.

- Review the generated schedules to find your preferred schedule.
- Select the Heart icon to name and favorite a schedule.

- Select each course to set enrollment options and select the Save button.
- Select the Add to Cart button to import the courses to your Shopping Cart.
- Review the Success message to confirm courses were successfully imported.

Registering for Classes
Students can register for classes via Advanced Class Search, Simple Class Search, or their shopping cart. The shopping cart is recommended so that students can plan and validate the selections before registration begins.

Registration Holds
There are a number of reasons a student may not be eligible to register. Students can contact their advisor, dean, or the Registrar's Office if none of these reasons apply and they do not know why they can't enroll.
Undergraduate, divinity, and nursing students must meet with an advisor to be marked eligible to enroll.
At the start of fall and spring semesters, students are asked to verify their personal information by completing the Student Verification of Data task. A registration hold will prevent course registration until the task has been completed. A help guide for completing this task can be found here: Help guide: Student Verification of Data.
Once each academic year, students are required to complete the Student Financial Responsibility Agreement. A registration hold will prevent course registration until the task has been completed. A help guide for completing this task can be found here: Help guide: Student Financial Responsibility Agreement.
There are other, less common registration holds that may be assigned. Details on what actions need to be taken to remove the hold will be available in DukeHub.
Special Considerations
This section contains information about additional features and considerations that may be necessary when registering.
Navigate to View/Drop Classes under the Enrollment menu to drop a class(es) from your schedule.
- Select the Check box next to the enrolled or waitlisted class(es) to drop.
- Select the Drop button.
- Review the Drop Classes box to confirm the selected class(es) to drop. Select the Drop button to proceed or the Cancel button to keep the class(es).
- If the Drop button is selected, review the Drop results and select the OK button. The class(es) will no longer appear in the View/Drop Classes section.

The Drop If Enrolled feature can only be used when students are initially enrolling in their classes. This means that if you’re interested in enrolling in a class that is currently full, you can use Drop If Enrolled to indicate that you’d like to be enrolled in that class if a seat opens up, and you can indicate which class you would like to drop if a seat in your preferred class opens up.
When to use Drop If Enrolled:
- If you have a time conflict between one of your enrolled classes and a waitlisted class.
- If you are enrolled in a different section of the same course.
Using the Advanced Class Search or Simple Class Search to find your preferred class. Next, identify the class to drop if your preferred class is added to your schedule.
- Click on the ellipsis for your preferred class and select the Enroll option.
- In the Enrollment Options section, click the dropdown arrow under Drop the class below if Enrolled in the Class above and select which class you want to drop if enrolled.
- Click Save after confirming the selection. Should a seat become available and if there are no conflicts with the preferred/waitlisted class, the class you select will be removed from your schedule immediately.
- If waitlisted, review the Enrollment Results message and select Save.

Permission numbers are used in the registration process to allow faculty to grant permission for students to enroll when the student does not meet a prerequisite, to override a class capacity, or when a class requires permission. Permission numbers are also required during the second week of classes for all undergraduate courses below the 500 level.
Important:
- Students must contact the instructor of record, or the department, to obtain a permission number.
- Permission numbers are unique to each section of a class and cannot be used interchangeably for crosslisted sections.
- Permission numbers may be used by only one student.
- Permission numbers are good for only one enrollment transaction and cannot be used multiple times.
